Cardinal Stage Building Sold!
Bloomington, IN – Cardinal Stage is excited to announce the sale of its facility at 900 S Walnut. The building has served the organization well since 2009, but in the past few years, Cardinal has outgrown the facility, which lacks capacity for rehearsals, long-term storage, and other operational needs.
Cardinal put the building up for sale in early 2018, and has just closed on a sale of the property to Loren Wood Builders (LWB), who will be relocating from their current facility on E 3rd St. LWB have been huge supporters of Cardinal Stage and the broader Bloomington arts and culture community, so this was a wonderful match for both organizations. The LWB team has exciting plans for the space, and they are going to be great caretakers of the historic building.
“We are really excited to make our new home at 900 S Walnut! Cardinal Stage has been one of our most cherished arts organizations. Beyond that, they have been amazing stewards of this building,” says Loren Wood of Loren Wood Builders. “We are excited to follow in their footsteps in this space, as well as to see what is beyond the horizon for Cardinal. We look forward to partnering with them into the future, both in their next landing spot and in their upcoming seasons and productions.”
This development helps Cardinal make a significant stride towards fulfilling the space and facility goals set forth in its current strategic plan, tasking Cardinal with securing permanent and adequate production, rehearsal, and storage space for its ongoing operations. Cardinal will now shift to seeking a new, permanent home for the company. The timing is ideal since Cardinal is currently not in production on any shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This pause in production will allow the Cardinal team more time to identify and upgrade a new facility.
In the meantime, Cardinal Stage has temporarily moved its administrative operations into the home of the Bloomington Academy of Film & Theatre (BAFT) at 411 E 7th St. Cardinal and BAFT have partnered consistently since BAFT launched in early 2019, and Cardinal is incredibly grateful to John Armstrong, Eric Shelley and the rest of the BAFT team for the opportunity to collaborate in new ways.
“We will miss our home at 900 S Walnut. It’s a terrific, old building that has served us well for years, allowing Cardinal to grow to support hundreds of area artists and craftspeople and become a staple of the Bloomington Arts and Culture scene,” says Managing Director Gabe Gloden. “But the time has come to pursue a more full-service facility for the majority of our needs.”
Please note that Cardinal does not intend to pursue the creation of its own performance space. While the next Cardinal facility will grow the organization’s operational capacity significantly, Cardinal still plans on working closely with its longtime venue partners at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater and Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center to ensure that those spaces remain vibrant and viable.
