Fall Walkabout Radio Play Series:

Cardinal’s Walkabout Radio Plays are a safe way to enjoy great storytelling in a unique setting! Each play is set in Bloomington and takes place on a designated walking route. All you need is a smart phone and your favorite headphones, and the world will be transformed around you! Listen to a new scene at each location as the story unfolds.

Originally released in the fall of 2020, The Women in the Woods is a 4-episode, site-specific radio play series about a young woman who arrives at IU and discovers she has ties to Bloomington that she’s never known about. With help from the spirits of her ancestors, she becomes a Sentinel – guarding the town from a mysterious evil presence that is out to destroy the town and corrupt its inhabitants.

#1: The Women in the Woods by Josie Gingrich

When Ellie accepts a mysterious university scholarship, she doesn’t realize it comes with a huge catch. Ellie discovers her roots in the town are much deeper than she knew, and she must decide if she is going to take on a responsibility she never could have imagined. Listeners will be transported to various locations on Ellie’s journey and see IU’s beautiful campus in a ghostly new light.

Recommended for ages 14+

Estimated Experience Time: 50 minutes, including 10-15 minutes of walking (non-walking time estimate: 40 minutes)

Additional information: There are benches at most locations on this walking route. You will be walking into Dunn’s Woods and near the creek, so bug spray is recommended.

#2: The Brewsters by Emily Goodson

This prologue to The Women in the Woods is set in the mid-1800’s, where we find the Brewster sisters alive and…not quite well. When one of the sisters goes rogue, a wave of unusual and unsettling events ripple through the town. A local girl named Lizzie is swept up in a magical power struggle and forced to face some hard truths about her family. 

Listeners will be transported into the past, and landmarks on IU’s beautiful campus will be given new meaning in this fantastical world created by local playwright Emily Goodson. 

Recommended for ages 14+

Estimated Experience Time: 55 minutes, including approximately 15 minutes of walking (non-walking time estimate: 40 minutes)

Additional information: There are seating options at many locations on this walking route. You will be walking in a wooded area near the creek, so bug spray is recommended.

#3: Inheritance by Josie Gingrich

Ellie, now the Sentinel of Bloomington, is trying to find some normalcy in her life. Between fighting cannibal zombies and sentient vampire bats, she’s stepped into the wild world of dating…but The Evil has other plans for her. This play will take listeners on a short walk around the iconic Courthouse Square.

Recommended for ages 14+

#4: Trap & Release by Emily Goodson

A normal morning at the Farmer’s Market takes an unexpected turn when Ellie and Levi meet Lizzie, a strange girl from another time. Their destinies are intertwined as they fight a final, very personal battle against the forces of evil that threaten Bloomington. The final play in the fall series takes listeners on a short walk down the beloved B-line.

Meet the Playwrights

Josie GingrichJosie Gingrich is a playwright, novelist, and former Bloomington resident. She has an MFA in Writing from Spalding University, and is a published young adult author under the pen name Josie Bloss. She lives with her family in Indianapolis. Emily Goodson is a playwright working in the Midwest. She has written multiple musicals, including Lights on the Radio Tower (composer Kevin James Thornton), and Calling All Kates (composer Jeremy Schonfeld). As a recipient of the 2019 Lincoln City Fellowship through the Speranza Foundation, Emily developed the book and concept for Sticks & Stones: A New Musical Featuring the Work of Neko Case. It was workshopped through the Indiana University Summer Theatre program in July 2019 directed by and developed under Kate Galvin. She is currently developing a piece called Kuliling (composer Ed Gatchalian) to open in the Philippines. Her latest play Besties was a 2020 semi-finalist for the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Conference.
